Gerald became the first African-born player to debut for the German national team (Die Mannschaft) in 2001.
The retired German international, who now coaches the youth team of Schalke 04, was born in the Ghanaian town of Mampong but moved to Germany at a tender age of 12 and eventually represented the European country.
Asamoah earned 43 caps with six goals for the world champions.
He recently paid the full surgery cost of a young Nigerian girl, Isioma Kenebi Okoh, who had a single ventricle defect, a heart condition, from his heart foundation
