Pro-NPP vigilante group Delta Force on Thursday stormed a Circuit in the Ashanti region and freed some 13 of its members who were standing trial for disturbances at the regional coordinating council.
The 13 Delta Force members are likely to be to be charged with escape from lawful custody after they turned themselves in last night.
The incident has attracted widespread condemnation in the country. Many security analysts have faulted the police for not anticipating such a situation considering the delicate nature of the case.
Speaking shortly after the incident, Rev. Professor Emmanuel Asante said the Police must crack the whip and ensure that the activities of the vigilante groups are ended immediately.
“All that we need to do is for the Police to crack down the whip to ensure that these outlaws, these groups do not disturb the rule of law and the democracy that we are enjoying in our land.
“These are outlaws and as outlaws, they must be addressed as outlaws. The Police who has the responsibility to maintain law and order must crack the whip…if they have difficulty they call in the other security agencies to come in and rally with them.”
