Former Football Kenya Federation president Sam Nyamweya has criticised CAF’s decision to strip Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title, describing the ruling as “daylight robbery.”
The CAF Appeal Board overturned Senegal’s 1-0 extra-time victory over Morocco, citing breaches of Articles 82 and 84 after Senegal players briefly walked off in protest of a late penalty decision in Rabat.
Although the match was halted for over 15 minutes, Senegal returned to the pitch. Morocco’s Brahim DÃaz missed the penalty, and Pape Gueye later scored in extra time to secure what was initially Senegal’s second AFCON title.
Nyamweya argued that CAF’s interpretation of the regulations was flawed, stressing that the match was completed under the authority of the referee.
“This is an exceptionally serious decision based on a wrong interpretation of the rules,” he said. “Senegal may have been at fault for walking off, but they returned, and the game was played to its conclusion.”
He maintained that overturning the result undermines football’s core principles.
“CAF’s decision amounts to daylight robbery. Football must be won on the pitch, not in boardrooms,” Nyamweya added.
He warned that the ruling sets a dangerous precedent that could damage the credibility of African football.
