Former Black Stars midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has weighed in on the intensifying national debate regarding a potential World Cup call-up for veteran forward André Ayew.
Speaking amid growing calls for the 36-year-old to be included in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Agyemang-Badu described the prospect of the state honouring its icons as a "privilege," signaling his support for a structured transition for the country’s longest-serving stars.
The discussion has gained significant momentum following recent comments from political figures and sports administrators who argue that Ayew’s unprecedented service deserves a grand finale on the world stage.
Member of Parliament Eric Edem Agbana recently made a case for Ayew’s inclusion, citing the need to reward "sacrifice and loyalty."
Agyemang-Badu noted that while such gestures are not "compulsory," they represent a vital culture of appreciation that he fully supports.
“I don’t think it’s compulsory but if the country wants to honour former footballers I will support it. It’s a privilege,” Badu told Citi Sports.
Ghana is set to face Austria and Germany in late March as part of preparations for the 2026 World Cup.
