Black Starlets head coach Dr Prosper Narteh Ogum has concluded a demanding seven-week nationwide screening exercise aimed at identifying Ghana’s next crop of U17 talents, following the final assessment of 34 players on Sunday.
The extensive exercise, conducted in five separate batches, was designed to broaden the talent base ahead of Ghana’s participation in the 2026 U17 Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to take place in Morocco. At the end of the process, 21 players were selected to join the 23-member squad that represented Ghana at the 2025 WAFU U17 Championship in Ivory Coast, where the Black Starlets finished as runners-up.
The combined group of 44 players will remain in camp for further training and evaluation as Dr Ogum and his technical team work towards naming the final 23-man squad for the continental tournament.
Reflecting on the exercise, Dr Ogum described the process as intense but rewarding. He noted that the high level of talent identified has made the next phase of selection particularly challenging, with strong competition expected across all positions. He added that the hunger, discipline and tactical understanding shown by the players have been encouraging signs for the technical team.
Chairman of the National Juvenile Committee, JoeSalam Abubakar, was present throughout the screening process, including the final assessment phase.
The Black Starlets are expected to intensify preparations in camp as they fine-tune the squad ahead of the 2026 U17 AFCON in Morocco.
