The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has formally presented the Sports Fund Bill to Parliament, marking a significant step toward structured funding for sports in Ghana.
Following his confirmation as Minister, the Buem Constituency MP pledged to champion the passage of the Bill, emphasizing its potential to “hasten the nation’s sports development.”
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, December 11, Adams highlighted the persistent funding challenges faced by sports, particularly disciplines outside of football.
“It’s quite clear that over the years, this House has had challenges to deal with many issues that affect funding in our sports generally. Funding is mostly secured to support just football, when indeed, when we talk about sports, it goes beyond football,” he said.
The Minister recalled prior efforts to establish sustainable financing structures for sports, describing them as unsuccessful.
"There have been many attempts to put together a funding system that will enable the Ministry [Sports and Recreation] execute its programme by bringing on board many more sporting disciplines and supporting them,” he said.
Adams expressed optimism that the proposed Sports Fund would finally address these long-standing constraints.
“When approved, we will not have the challenges of funding our sports, and sports will grow to bring about development and support other progressive activities that we do in this country,” he added.
For decades, Ghanaian athletes outside of football have relied on irregular donations and limited sponsorships to compete internationally. The Minister believes that the Bill’s passage will provide the financial backbone needed to support holistic sports development nationwide.
