England-born members of Ghana’s national team are excited about the prospect of facing the Three Lions at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, head coach Otto Addo has revealed.
His remarks follow Thursday’s draw in New York City, which placed Ghana and England together in Group L for their first-ever competitive meeting.
The draw produced one of the tournament’s most anticipated fixtures, with Ghana also set to play Panama and Croatia in a challenging group.
Several England-born Black Stars players, including Brandon Thomas-Asante, Antoine Semenyo, Jerome Opoku, Joseph Anang, and the injured Tariq Lamptey, have ties to English football through birth or development.
“Brandon Thomas-Asante and other England-born Black Stars players have called me to say they’re looking forward to facing England,” Addo said after the draw.
The date and venue for the contest will be confirmed Saturday by tournament organisers. The game is expected to command a global audience as the two nations meet in a competitive setting for the first time.
Their only previous senior encounter came in a 2011 friendly at Wembley, which ended in a 1-1 draw. This World Cup meeting carries far greater stakes, with both teams targeting early momentum in the expanded 48-team tournament.
Ghana approach the competition with confidence and hope of replicating, or surpassing, their notable 2010 quarter-final achievement.
The clash with England promises intensity, narrative depth, and potential implications for Group L’s final standings.
