As part of its landmark insurance policy for referees across the Premier League, Division One League, and Women’s Premier League, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has secured an extensive set of complimentary benefits aimed at providing additional protection and peace of mind for match officials and their families.
The policy, delivered in partnership with Enterprise Life, goes beyond the core components of life cover, medical support, critical illness and disability protection. It introduces a unique welfare enhancement that directly supports referees during moments of personal lossâan intervention many have described as unprecedented in Ghanaian football.
Under the complimentary benefits, Enterprise Life will offer three distinct family-related support packages at no cost to the referees:
Five referees will receive financial assistance in the unfortunate event of the passing of their spouses. This provision, fully funded by Enterprise Life, is designed to cushion affected referees during periods of emotional and financial strain.
In circumstances where a referee loses a child, the policy ensures that five referees annually will be supported with financial relief. This compassionate benefit reflects the commitment to the broader well-being of match officials beyond the pitch.
Similarly, the insurance package offers financial support to referees who suffer the loss of a parent. As with the other components, this benefit is entirely covered by Enterprise Life.
These family-support interventions underscore the GFA's determination to elevate referee welfare to an entirely new level. They build on the wider insurance policy, which already includes group life cover, critical illness protection, permanent disability compensation, workmen’s compensation, and medical expenses.
Stakeholders have praised the initiative as a holistic and humane approach to supporting refereesâacknowledging that their responsibilities extend beyond football and into family life, where unexpected challenges can take a significant toll.
