Ghanaian midfielder Ahmed Awua Ankrah played a key role as Riga FC secured the Latvia Virsliga title for the first time in four years following a goalless draw against Tukums on matchday 34 last Friday.
The 23-year-old has been one of Riga’s standout performers this season, establishing himself among the league’s most consistent midfielders. Known for his composure and tactical awareness, Ankrah has topped the charts in recoveries and challenges, combining his defensive duties with intelligent playmaking and precise passing in the opposition half.
Featuring in 31 league matches and completing the full 90 minutes in nearly all, Ankrah has contributed three goals and three assists. His exceptional performances earned him the Player of the Month award in June after scoring a brace against rivals RFS.
Beyond the domestic league, Ankrah was instrumental in Riga’s impressive run in the Europa Conference League qualifiers, where they eliminated FC Dila Gori of Georgia and Beitar Jerusalem of Israel before narrowly losing to Slavia Praha in the play-off round.
Riga clinched the league title with two games to spare, holding a six-point lead over their closest challengers on goal difference.
For Ankrah, the triumph marks a major milestone in his European career. A native of Drobo, he captained Parma’s youth team before earning promotion to the senior side. After loan spells to gain experience, he moved permanently to FC Koper in 2023 before joining Riga later that year for an undisclosed fee.
Ankrah, who reportedly attracted interest from clubs in Switzerland and Russia during the summer, now has the chance to add another honour when Riga face Auda in the Latvia Cup final.
