Former Asante Kotoko midfielder Michael Akufo has attributed the Porcupine Warriors defeat to Wydad Casablanca in the CAF Confederation Cup playoff to inexperience.
The Porcupine Warriors face an uphill task in Morocco this weekend, after falling short to Wydad Casablanca in the first leg of the second preliminary round at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.
Striker Joseph Bakasu scored the only goal of the match, ensuring his outfit return to the North African country with the advantage. A corner kick in the 47th minute wasn’t properly dealt with by Kotoko’s defence, with Bakasu capitalizing on it to fire home from close range for the match-winner.
Despite being a man down, Kotoko showed resilience and managed to avoid further damage, though they struggled to create meaningful chances going forward.
“Most of the players are inexperienced and new to the Confederation Cup. I knew it was not going to be easy for Kotoko playing against a tough opponent like Wydad” Akufo told Radio Gold.
“If you are not careful, you will give too much respect to your opponent as young players. We controlled the first fifteen minutes of the match, had a couple of chances, but failed to utilize them”
“For Wydad, their game plan was to soak the pressure and then get us on the counter, which worked for them. Our goalkeeper Mohammed Camara was sent off in a counter break situation, which made the game difficult for us”
