Ghana’s Parliament has thrown its full support behind the Democracy Cup, describing the annual football competition as a powerful tool for promoting national unity and democratic values.
The Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, speaking ahead of the second edition of the tournament, called the Cup a true “concept of unity” that goes beyond football.
He made the remarks during the presentation of the 2025 Democracy Cup trophy to the Ghana Armed Forces as part of a series of ceremonial visits.
“We see a concept of unity of purpose, characterizing this process. Unity of purpose is so essential; for developing, for building, for achieving excellence. With this in mind, the Speaker led the process and we launched the Democracy Cup,” Mr. Djietror said.
This year’s event is set for September 5, 2025, at the University of Ghana Stadium, where Accra Hearts of Oak will face rivals Accra Great Olympics in a showdown that has already sparked excitement among fans.
Launched in by Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, the Democracy Cup blends football and civic education, aiming to strengthen Ghana’s democratic culture while harnessing the passion of the game to foster unity across the country.
