Asante Kotoko head coach Abdul Karim Zito says the upcoming GHALCA Top 4 tournament will serve as a crucial testing ground for his squad ahead of their return to continental football.
The Porcupine Warriors open their campaign on Wednesday, August 20, against Ghana Premier League champions Bibiani GoldStars at the University of Ghana Stadium.
Both clubs will be representing Ghana in Africa next season, with Kotoko competing in the CAF Confederation Cup while GoldStars prepare for the Champions League.
Zito believes the competition provides the type of competitive environment his team needs before embarking on their continental challenge.
“It [GHALCA Top 4] will help me a lot, it will help those of us who have qualified for Africa,” Zito said.
“Because in Ghana, trying to find matches like this is very, very difficult. You don't see Kotoko playing Hearts because they want to strengthen their team.
“You don't see Medeama playing Kotoko in friendly matches. It doesn't come. I will take this one as some of the friendly matches we are going to play and how I want my boys to play.
“So I will assess the boys by the Top Four and see how best we can also face Africa.”
Kotoko begin their Confederation Cup journey against Nigeria’s Kwara United in September.
The Reds will host the first leg before travelling for the return fixture, with a potential second-round clash against Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca awaiting if they advance.
