Enyimba FC safe pair of hands Fatau Dauda has confessed fearing his former club AshGold could taste relegation at the end of the 2016/17 Ghana Premier League season.
The Miners were confronted with numerous challenges at the start of the season, compelling Basjhiru Hayford to resign as head coach of the club.
The former Ghana Premier League champions employed the services of Dreams FC coach C.K Akonnor to rescue them from the claws of relegation.
Despite being away from home, Fatau Dauda jet a sharp eye on the performance of his former side in the season and has confessed given up that they could be relegated.
“When the season started and things were difficult, everybody felt the club could kiss relegation this season. I was scared too and I felt they could taste relegation,” he told West Africa’s leading soccer portal GHANAsoccernet.com
“Whilst I was in Nigerian I was following the performance of the team on the internet every weekend. I called the CEO Kudjoe Fianoo several time to discuss the situation and he kept assuring me they will stay.
“I am happy they escaped,” he noted.
Fatau, who is the longest season goalkeeper of the club in the last decade acknowledged the role of the new players who were purchased by the club in the second round as an influential aspect of their relegation escape.
“I must also commend the idea of the technical team and the management in bringing on board new and hungry players to strengthen the side in the second round.
“They fought harder and combined very well with the existing squad to save the team. That was a smart move from the management,” he added.
Fatau Dauda was a member of the AshGold side that won the league in 2014 for the first time in the 21st century.
