Ghana midfielder Derek Boateng has expressed his belief in Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah to deliver the Africa Cup of Nations title to the country.
Ghana last won a continental silverware in 1982, where they defeated host nation Libya 7-6 on penalties.
Since then, the team have been to the finals on three occasions but failed to end their 35-year title drought, with the latest being the 2015 finals in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, where they painfully lost 9-8 in the shootout against Ivory Coast.
Appiah was appointed on a two-year contract to replace former coach Avram Grant, who departed the position after leading the team to a fourth-place finish in the Africa Cup of Nation in Gabon.
The 56-year-old has started his reign on a clean slate after guiding the Black Stars to demolish the Walias of Ethiopia 5-0 in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nation qualifier some weeks ago.
And speaking on Metro TV Sports File, Boateng intimated that, the Black Stars have a chance of qualifying to Russia 2018 under Kwesi Appiah.
“I know people are waiting for the trophy but they have to keep on waiting because winning the title will come by itself and they don’t have to give up hope on the players, and I can assure every Ghanaian that now we have a good coach.
“Appiah is the right man for the job and I was so happy when I heard the FA have given him the job again because I think we have the materials here, who can do a better job, then they go outside and bring foreign coaches who do not teach anything, they don’t teach us anything.
“Look at how Stephen Appiah and Richard Kingson are with the national team, I think it’s encouraging and these are some of the names we need on the technical bench because they have played the game before and will understand and motivate the players.”
