The Dutch FA has shockingly rejected an appeal by Ghana striker Elvis Manu to have his red overturned claiming his refusal to protest the decision at the time proved his guilt.
However, replays appeared to show that the ball actually hit Manu’s chest, but referee Edwin van de Graaf still decided to send off the forward, which led to instant protests in the stands by fans of Go Ahead Eagles.
Manu refused to protest much at the time, but as the 23-year-old walked off the pitch his teammates made their feelings known to the referee.
Go Ahead Eagles chairman Edwin Lugt wrote on Twitter: “KNVB prosecutors argued that the quiet way Elvis left the field after the red card shows that he acknowledges that he hand-balled it.
“What are you supposed to do? Should he have tackled the ref and then left the pitch? Be happy that his behaviour was so civilised.”
Lugt then referenced another red card that was given to Manu earlier this year in a win over NEC Breda.
“For those who have forgotten: this is, after the NEC game, the 2nd wrongful suspension of Elvis Manu in 14 games,” Lugt added.
