Ghana defender Rashid Sumaila is set to breakup with Portuguese gaffer Pedro Caixinha following Al Gharafa’s decision to allow the coach to take up the vacant coaching job at Scottish side Rangers.
Caixinha is set to become the new Rangers coach after getting clearance from his Qatari club on Thursday to move to Ibrox.
Reports say the Qatar side initially declined the offer to allow the coach to walk out of his contract but the Scottish side has eventually succeeded in reaching a deal.
The three parties, Caixinha, Rangers and Al Gharafa are believed to have completed talks on Thursday and the Portuguese trainer will leave the Leopards in May.
Caixinha, who has been the godfather of Rashid Sumaila since he joined Al Gharafa on loan from Al Qadsia emerged as Rangers' number one choice to replace Mark Warburton last week.
Al Gharafa confirmed his departure by posting on Twitter: "Al-Gharafa reached agreement with Scottish Club Rangers about the transfer of head coach Pedro Caixinha.
"Our club considered the financial benefits of Al-Gharafa especially when we know the coach's contract ends in 45 days."
The Doha-based side added in Arabic that "the manager's desire to exploit the chance of moving to Rangers was stronger than our desire for him to stay".
Caixinha joined Al Gharafa in Qatar in 2015 after a spell with Mexican side Santos Laguna.
He’s had stints with Uniao de Leiria and Nacional in his native Portugal and has been a member of the coaching staff of Sporting Lisbon, Panathinaikos, Rapid Bucharest and Saudi Arabia.
