Bolgatanga, Dec 26, GNA – As part of the Christmas celebration, the Children’s Wing of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal (CCR) of the Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish in Bolgatanga has reached out to vulnerable street children and their parents.
The Children Ministry did not only give food and drinks and interacted with the homeless and less privileged as usual, they further organized free health screening exercise and medication administered to those that had health problems.
The event was organised on the theme, “Christmas, a season of giving” and it brought together street children and their parents, persons with disabilities and the aged.
The health screening was done by health personnel from the Upper East Regional Hospital and the Aide a La Vulnerabillite, an organisation that offers free health services to vulnerable people.
Speaking with the Ghana News Agency during the exercise, Mr Jacob Alhassan, the Parish Coordinator, CCR, said Christmas was a period of joy and celebration and Christians had a duty to share with the vulnerable in society.
He said God taught mankind the perfect way to show love by giving His only beloved Son Jesus Christ to save the world, therefore it was imperative to understand that sharing whatever one had with the less privileged was the way to exhibit the true virtues of Christianity.
“When it comes to giving, it is not about the more you have, it is the desire to give no matter the little you have. We are telling the general public that God so loved the world that He gave us His only begotten son that whosoever believe in Him would not perish but have eternal life, so this would help the children to understand the importance of giving.
Mr Stephen Adongo, one of the Teachers of the Children’s Ministry, explained that the Christmas charity activity was an annual event undertaken by the children through the sharing of gifts with the homeless and street children, but that of this year took a different dimension as the children and their parents were served with hot meals and taken through health screening.
He said the objective of the gesture from the children was to share the joy of Christ with the homeless and give them some level of assurance, love and hope to give them a sense of belonging.
Mr Adongo thanked the health personnel and the management of Plaza Health Centre for offering their facilities and equipment for the health screening exercise and the Endswell pharmacy, Benson Pharmacy and Next Generation Home for supporting the event with medications.
Mr Charles Lwanga Moandryien Tabase, the Chairperson of the Aide a La Vulnerabillite, who is also a Senior Health Tutor, Zuarungu Nursing and Midwifery Training College, said the screening comprised checking of sugar level, malaria, HIV/AIDS among others while treatment was administered to those who showed symptoms of some illnesses.
Ms Nana Adjoa Amoh, a 13-year old child of the Children’s Ministry of the CCR explained that it was the passion and desire of the children to share the little they had with their colleagues on the street to show Jesus Christ’s love for them and encouraged the less privileged children to have faith in Christ in all their endeavours.
Mrs Mary Tindanbil, a visually impaired old woman who benefitted from the health screening expressed gratitude to the children for extending the gesture to them.
