Tarkwa (W/R), Dec. 26, GNA - Two persons from Odumase near Aboso in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality have been admitted to bail in the sum of 10,000 Ghana cedis each, with two sureties one to be a public servant.
The accused persons, Michael Tenge popularly known as Quasi, 43, and Kwesi Dagarti, 27, who are both farmers appeared before the Tarkwa Circuit Court for failing to register their chainsaw machine and stealing 23 pieces of two by nine lumber and a half log of Odum wood all valued 7,843.3 Ghana cedis.
They pleaded not guilty to both charges and will reappear in court on 17 January, 2020.
Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Faustina Celestina Anaman informed the court that the complainant, Evelyn Oduro Ampomah is a range manager with the Ghana Forestry Service Commission-Tarkwa.
She said on March 19, 2019, while the complainant was on a routine patrol with her forestry guards in the Bonsaso Forest Reserve, near Domeabra Aboso they heard the sound of a chainsaw machine.
According to the prosecutor, they then traced the source of the sound where they met the accused persons busily sawing Odum tree they had earlier fell with the chainsaw machine into boards.
The complainant quickly ordered the guards to arrest them with the chainsaw machine and they were transported to the Aboso police station for interrogation, Inspector Anaman added.
On March 23, the prosecutor told the court that the police visited the crime scene with the accused persons, where they counted 23 pieces of boards sawn out of the log which was quoted by the Ghana Forestry Service Commission at Tarkwa as GHC7,843.30 worth.
She said Tenge and Dagarti in their caution statements admitted the offence and pleaded for leniency.
