Akuapem-Mamfe Dec 16, GNA - Madam Joyce Bekoe, assembly member for Mamfe West and South electoral area says women’s participation in governance was critical to national development and therefore must be supported.
She said due to stereotypes, many women shunned the idea of becoming leaders even in their own groups let alone contesting for positions in local governance and called for aggressive measures to remove such barriers.
Ms Bekoe who is contesting for the second time as an assembly member said this during an interview with “Women’s Profile’ a GNA platform to promote women’s participation in local governance and decision making.
She said although her first term had been successful, it had not been easy and called on Non-Governmental Organizations working in the interest of women to step up their game to get more women to participate in governance.
Ms Bekoe giving account of her stewardship said through her efforts the Mamfe Methodist Girls Senior High School (Meghiss) had been provided with a six-unit classroom block to reduce decongestion and other electrification projects in the school.
She said apart from the projects she lobbied for the communities in her electoral area, she had served as a role model to whip up the interest of women in local governance.
Ms Bekoe, a National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) official, is contesting a male and is calling on all eligible voters to once again give her their votes to continue what she had started.
