Cape Coast, Dec 14. GNA - Six hundred and Forty Five (645) women have filed nominations to contest in the December 17 District Level Elections (DLE) in the Central Region.
Out of the number, 101 filed to contest in the assembly member slot, while 544 are vying to become Unit Committee members.
Mrs Philomina Adusei, the Central Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC) disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Cape Coast.
The Abura Asebu Kwaman Kesse and Ajumako Enyan Esiam Districts remained the districts with the highest women aspirants with 11 each.
However, while no female filed to contest in the assembly member position at the Gomoa Central district, 12 women filed to serve on the Unit Committee
Also, Agona West district had 49 women aspiring for the Unit Committee Member seats, while Gomoa East and Upper Denkyira West districts had the lowest aspirants at the category with five aspiring candidates each.
In all, a total of 5,905 aspirants filed nominations to contest in the elections with 1,767 of them contesting in the Assembly category and 4,138 in the Unit Committee in the Region.
For the District Assembly category, 1,666 men filed nominations as against 101 women whereas the Unit 544 women filed nomination as against 3,594 men at unit committee.
The Electoral Commission (EC) opened nominations for the elections from Monday October 7 to 11, 2019.
The elections would be held on Tuesday, December 17, 2019.
