Accra, Dec. 11, GNA – Government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration (MFARI) in collaboration with the Columbian Government, has trained 50 Ghanaians to enhance their proficiency levels in speaking and writing the Spanish language.
The step is to enable Ghanaians to learn the Columbian culture and enhance existing relationships with other Spanish speaking countries.
Ghana, in 2014, signed an agreement with Columbia to help its officials and diplomats to understand and speak Spanish as a step to improve the cooperation and relations that exists between the two countries.
Participants, made up of staff from a number of public sector institutions including the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defence, Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, Narcotics Control Board, and the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, were taken through a three-month intensive training on speaking, writing and reading the Spanish language.
They were also trained on how to make some Spanish foods.
Mr Harold A. Agyeman, the Director of the MFARI, said if funds are made available next year, the training programme would be re-organised.
He said last year, 41 people were trained and called on public institutions to register and take advantage of the opportunity when it is reorganized.
Mr Agyeman congratulated the participants for their enthusiasm and commitment towards the training and advised them not to stop practising it to maintain and improve upon the knowledge they have acquired.
Madam Estella Agudelo, a Professor of Spanish, from the ‘Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana’, Columbia, who facilitated the programme, said the programme sought to deepen the relationship between the two countries and equip Ghanaians with knowledge about Columbia.
Mrs Deborah Asempa Antwi, the Content Manager of GTV Life, who was a participant at the training, said a multicultural and disciplinary approach was used to teach them, which made the class interesting and easy to understand the language.
She said it enable them to explore the world at ease and engage in mutually beneficial relations such as trade with nationals of Spanish speaking countries.
Participants at the graduation ceremony held on Tuesday in Accra, exhibited skills in reciting poems, conversing and singing in Spanish.
