Sefwi-Yamfo (W/N), Dec. 7, GNA - Twenty-four farmers and four extension agriculture officers in the Akontombra District of the Western North Region have been presented with various prizes for their immense contribution to the socio-economic development of the country.
They received motorcycles, knapsack spraying machines, flat screen televisions, Wellington boots, agro-chemicals, bars of key soap, bicycles and refrigerators.
Forty-year old Kwabena Ofori was adjudged the Overall District Best Farmer at a colourful Farmers’ Day celebration held at Sefwi-Yamfo.
He received a motorcycle, knapsack spraying machine and a pair of wellington boots.
Mr Alex Tetteh, Member of Parliament for Akontombra, commended the gallant farmers for their role in national development and called on them to work hard since the District would soon benefit from a rice factory under the One District One Factory initiative.
He reiterated government’s effort in making the agriculture sector attractive to the youth and advised them to adopt scientific methods of farming.
Mr Yawson Amoah, the District Chief Executive, asked farmers to support the Ghana COCOBOD rehabilitation programme in the area.
He announced that 218 farmers have been paid initial treatment grant and the Assembly, through the Cocoa Health and Extension Division, have raised 940 seedlings to be supplied to cocoa farmers in the District.
Mr Ofori, the District Best Farmer, lauded the Government's Planting for Food and Jobs and pruning and pollination of cocoa, which had helped improve farmers yield in the District and called for the sustenance of those programmes.
