‘Small scale agriculture development will ensure national growth’

Accra, Dec. 7, GNA - Developing small scale agriculture will ensure national growth as it creates jobs at the community level and provides nutritious foods for the health of the population.

Mr Daniel Alexander Nii-Noi Adumuah, the Adenta Municipal Chief Executive, said this at Assembly’s National Farmers' Day celebration.

He said in developing countries and emerging economies, agri-business was one of the main generators of employment and income, thus efforts must be made to ensure its growth.

Mr Adumuah said the Government, as part of plans to improve the agricultural sector, was encouraging the youth to go into agriculture by establishing greenhouse villages with modern technology of vegetable production.

He said the Adentan Municipal Assembly planned to take advantage of the technology, which aimed at encouraging youth entrepreneurship, with prospects of high earning incomes through the export of vegetables.

"Ultimately, the promotion of greenhouse technology would give meaning to the agenda of commercialising and transforming agriculture into a medium competitive venture," Mr Adumuah said.

He urged all stakeholders in agricultural to support the Government's agenda to transform the sector into a major tool for socio-economic growth.

Mrs Fafape Ama Etsa Foe, the Chief Executive Officer of E90 Ghana Ltd, a mushroom production facility, urged the Government to prioritise its One District One Factory agenda to boost the agricultural industry.

She observed that small scale farmers produced most of the fresh foods for the country and urged Ghanaians to patronise local agricultural products to help grow the industry.

Madam Pamea Agbotsi, the Chief Executive Officer of Pamela Chicks and Feeds, a poultry farm, was adjudged the Overall Best Municipal Farmer.

She holds a Masters’ Degree in International Business and credited with training more than 160 women from Ghana and Togo in agriculture.

The Day was on the theme: "Enhancing Small Scale Agriculture towards Agribusiness Development."
