Tamale, Dec. 06, GNA - Dr Hajia Adiza Sadik, International Programmes and Institutional Collection Director of the Tamale Technical University (TaTu), on Thursday called on the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) to build the capacities of the youth to acquire skills in tourism marketing.
According to her, Ghana tourism education in the country was poor, and said there was the need to design curriculum for schools to address the challenge.
Dr Sadik made the call during a hospitality and tourism management seminar, held in Tamale.
The event, organised by TaTu in partnership with the GTA, was on the theme: “Tourism education and career opportunities in Ghana”.
It was to address some of the challenges in the tourism sector and to also promote the Ghana tourism system to create more employment for the youth.
Dr Sadik said education was one of the major keys for the tourism industry, and indicated that it would provide support for undergraduates to be more knowledgeable and acquire the needed experience in the field, which would promote the tourism sector locally and internationally.
She expressed worry that the graduates from tourism education institutes and vocational training schools could not meet industry needs and demands in terms of quality and quantity and urged such training institutions to up their strategies to address this concern.
Alhaji Hakeem Ismail, the Northern Regional Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority mentioned some of the challenges confronting the tourism sector in the country, and said poor infrastructure in tourism, tourism technology, government inability to spend in the tourism sector and undeveloped nature of tourism products.
He urged members of the public to patronise domestic tourism to create more awareness and promote the sector.
Mr Musah Alhassan, the Chief Executive of Uprise Travel and Tour Company, advised the youth to venture into the tourism sector to improve on their wellbeing and contribute to the development of the country.
