Gbeogo (U/E) Dec. 4, GNA - Mr Sylvester Gariba Ateo, the Assistant Headmaster of Gbeogo School for the Deaf in the Tongo District in the Upper East Region has commended Aide à la vulnèrabillitè, charity-based health organisation for screening students for various conditions.
He said the exercise was long overdue as the students were not screened over the years, “It is something that we are always praying to have at least once awhile to ascertain the health status of our children. Most of these children are coming from vulnerable homes.”
He said most parents neglected the basic health needs of the children in the school, “So when it comes to health issues, it is nothing to write home about. They come to school with a lot of health conditions.”
Mr Ateo expressed gratitude to the organisation in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Gbeogo during a health screening exercise.
It is made up of health professionals with diverse expertise and had over the years embarked on similar activities at the Navrongo Central Prisons and the Mother of Mercy Babies Home at Sirigu, in the Kassena-Nankana West District.
The group checked the vital signs, including; temperature, weight, pulse rate of the children, examined their ears, nose and throat, tested them for malaria, and conducted general body examination on the about 300 students of the school.
The Assistant Headmaster said they would encourage management to keep a database on the health needs of the students, “The exercise has come at the right time, when it continues, it will help us take informed decisions.”
Mr Charles Lwanga Moandiyiem Tabase, Chairman of the charity-based group who addressed the students through a sign language interpreter, said the core mandate of Aide à la vulnèrabillitè as the name suggests, offered services to the less privileged and vulnerable in society.
He said the Organisation conducted needs assessment of the school in April this year, and realised health of the students was paramount.
The students with identified health problems would be referred to the Tongo District hospital or the Regional hospital in Bolga for further management, according to the Mr Tabase who told the students that “we have become friends of this school.”
