Dambai (O/R), Dec. 4, GNA - Dambai Boat Owners Association in the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region has started giving "special loading marks" to all boats as a measure to prevent disasters during the coming yuletide.
The marks are to guide boat operators in loading such that they do not overload the boats with goods to ensure safety on the river.
Mr Checki Akwasi, Chairman of the Association, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said the operators were also instructed not take more than 80 passengers at a time.
He said a monitoring team has also been put in place to ensure compliance and an accident-free yuletide.
Mr Akwasi said the Association is working hard to procure life jackets for its members and appealed to the Ministry of Transport for support.
Mr Kwame Owusu, a trader, commended the Association for the foresight and urged it also facilitate the supply of life jackets to passengers.
Overloading of boats on the Volta Lake has been a major concern for stakeholders, especially travellers during festive occasions.
In recent times, chiefs and other stakeholders have expressed concern over the practice leading to the move by the Association.
