Takoradi, Dec. 4, GNA - Reverend Seth Ameyaw Danquah, the Managing Editor of Young Advocate, a leading children’s newspaper in the Western and Central regions, has pleaded with drivers to make roads safe for children before, during and after the Yuletide.
He appealed to drivers to slow down when they get to school sites and endeavour to stop for children to cross the road.
Rev. Danquah also appealed to passengers and pedestrians to be stakeholders in ensuring safety on the roads.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency he cautioned children to be extra-careful when crossing the road and desist from playing close to it.
He said his outfit would run a series of road safety campaigns to educate children to save more lives and support the metro-wide lollipop project designed to reduce vehicular knockdowns and road crashes.
Rev. Danquah called on the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) to ensure zebra crossing markings were visible at vantage points, especially where schools were located, and create awareness on the need to stop for pedestrians, especially children.
He called on the city authorities and the Motor Traffic and Transport Division (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service to send men to the various crossings to control the traffic.
He noted that the absence of pedestrian walkways and jay-walking undermined safety whereas the speed levels of motorists was a major contributory factor to the severity of injuries and fatalities.
Rev. Danquah urged the public and the media, in particular, to join in the campaign against indiscipline on the roads and cautioned drivers to avoid drunk driving to prevent accidents.
