Afife (VR), Dec. 03, GNA - Literacy Ambassadors Ghana (LAG), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) passionate about promoting literacy among students has awarded 26 pupils found reading during their free time in the Eleme Sovi M/A Basic School in the Volta Region.
The awards were part of the “get caught reading competition,” by the NGO.
The awardees, made up of seven boys and nineteen girls were given exercise books, note books and reading materials to enhance their interest in reading.
Mr. Mathias Tulasi, the President of LAG, who was speaking at the award ceremony held at Eleme Sovi M/A Basic School, said the aim of LAG was to promote the love of reading among school children and that representatives of the NGO were in various schools monitoring reading habits of pupils.
He asked parents to help divert the attention of children from watching television to reading, saying, “in those days we had what we called bedtime stories where stories are read to children but it seems to have faded away.”
“Parents need to understand that reading is key to learning and conscious effort must be made in promoting it”.
Mr. Nelson Ahordo, the Headmaster of Eleme Sovi M/A Basic School, applauded LAG for promoting literacy in the country, saying: “the consistent poor performance recorded at the Basic Education Certificate Examination every year necessitated the move to support LAG in this school because we have identified that if our pupils can read well, they can understand every examination question and answer them well.”
Madam Mercy Elsie Essie Ashiagbor, the Municipal Education Director at Ketu North encouraged the students to develop interest in reading.
“Reading is the gateway to every subject and a student with interest in reading achieves greatness with a lot of ease,” she stated.
The Eleme Sovi M/A Basic School is the fourth school in the country in which the “get caught reading competition” has been launched by LAG.
