Accra, Dec 3, GNA - The Dansoman District of the Electricity Company of Ghana has since January 2019, retrieved more than GH¢200,000.00 from customers who were illegally using electricity.
The amount represents penalties and surcharges given to individuals and corporations, caught using power for free.
"The identified Customers were engaged in illegalities such as direct connections, meter tampering and meter bypass,” the Dansoman District Manager, Engineer Vincent Osei-Appiah, stated, in an official statement, issued to the Ghana News Agency, in Accra.
He said a special monitoring team set up to audit the electrical connections of establishments such as factories, warehouses and workshops, led to the identification of the unscrupulous customers.
Following the success of the taskforce so far, he said, the scope of their operations will be expanded to include all categories of customers and communities in the District.
The Dansoman District is one of the seven operational Districts of the ECG in the Accra West Region.
The Acting Accra West Regional General Manager, Engineer Ankomah Emmanuel, warned that going into the festive season, the Region would wage a relentless “war” on all illegal activities in the Region.
“We want to make the Accra West Region, the model for others to emulate. Special measures, including strategic partnerships with security agencies, have been taken to identify, surcharge and rectify all illegal connections in customers’ installations in the Region”.
He advised customers to boldly report any suspected illegal connections to the nearest ECG office, saying that in addition to the identity of the whistle blower being protected, there was a cash reward for such persons.
