Koforidua, Nov 30, GNA - Mrs Kate Valeria Bedjabeng, aspiring assembly member for Residential Electoral area, in the New Juaben South municipality has called for government support to increase women participation in local governance.
She was of the view that an affirmative action where men would be barred from contesting in areas where women were contesting at the District level Elections (DLE) would encourage and motivate more women to get involved.
Mrs Bedjabeng who is contesting for the second time and battling it out with three men said, the terrain was not easy for women considering their social and financial status and called for a well-designed support to push more women in governance.
The aspiring assembly member made the call in an interview with the GNA under an initiative called “Women’s profile” to project women contesting all forms of national elections in the Eastern Region.
The Women’s profile was instituted in 2015 and enabled 65 women contesting the DLE to be interviewed and their stories published as well as 12 women who contested the 2016 parliamentary elections on the ticket of several political parties.
She said her motivation to contest for the assembly election was to empower young girls and women in the area to have sources of livelihood and decent living conditions, after getting involved in some charity work in the area.
The aspirant described her first term as the representative of the people at the assembly, as very successful adding that through her efforts streetlights, footbridges and sources of potable water and many social amenities had been provided for the people.
She said when given the nod again on December 17, she would continue what she started doing in the area of girl child and women’s support as well as care for the aged.
Mrs Bedjabeng, a trader is among eight other women contesting in the New Juaben North and South municipalities.
