Tamale, Nov 29, GNA – The Catholic Relief Services (CRS), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), in partnership with the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly (TaMA) has rehabilitated five toilet facilities within the Tamale Metropolis to support the campaign against open defecation in the area.
The toilets, handed over to residents of the beneficiary communities, was under the NGO’s Urban Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Project, which is aimed at promoting good hygienic practices and sanitation among residents.
Addressing stakeholders as part of activities to mark this year’s World Toilet Day, themed: “Leaving no one behind”, Madam Carolyn Edlebeck, Head of Programmes at the CRS, said her outfit was committed to achieving Open Defecation Free (ODF) communities and to ensure improved sanitation within the Metropolis.
She lamented and said open defecation was a challenge in the metropolis and needed collective efforts from the citizenry and development partners to tackle.
Madam Edlebeck urged the residents to ensure proper maintenance of the facilities to help end open defecation and improve on the sanitation conditions in the area.
“Let us all begin the process to change the story of improper sanitation practices to stop open defecation for a healthy and beautiful Tamale”, she said.
“I again entreat everyone to contribute to bring light in their communities by serving as advocates for improved hygiene and sanitation practices, and together we can make our environment conducive for all of us”, she added.
Mr Emmanuel Kugo, the Urban WASH Project Manager, said government and other stakeholders needed to work together to expand access to improved sanitation and hygiene in the country.
He said even though some progress were made, there was the need for more efforts to be made to attain the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Six, which talks about access to improved sanitation.
He urged managers of the facilities to ensure that the facilities were maintained in good condition to aid access for use at all times.
Mr Abdul-Rahaman Baba Ahmed, the TaMA Coordinating Director, lauded the CRS for the initiative, and said the Assembly would continue to ensure that every community had access to improved sanitation services.
