Accra, Nov 12, GNA - Elephant Ladies, one of the groups within the Ladies Wing of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has assembled 500 women in Baatsonaa, for free training in what it is calling ‘example by practice’.
The beneficiaries are to receive free artisanal training in trades such as; dressmaking, soap making, cakes, bread, doughnut and decoration of slippers among many other things.
Leader of the initiative, Ms Serwah Dwumoh Bonsu, who is also the President of the Elephant Ladies said they were serving the purpose of President Akufo-Addo and the MP for Tema West, Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah.
“All the equipment that we are using for the training are donations from Mr Carlos Ahenkorah who also told us that the donations he made were on behalf of President Akufo-Addo who really is keen on uplifting women,” she said.
The 500 women who were to benefit from the training programme turned up at the site in Baatsonaa for an official launch of the initiative to empower the women.
Mr Ahenkorah, also responded to an invitation to be special guest of honour, turning up to a waiting crowd of women who mobbed him and showered him with praises.
Accompanying the MP were personalities including; the NPP’s Tema West Constituency Organizer, Richard Abeiku Mills and Mrs. Tigie Camara Embalo, wife of a Presidential Candidate in Guinea Bissau.
Ms Dwumo Bonsu, who is also an aspiring Assembly Member for Baatsonaa told journalists that under the auspices of Mr Ahenkorah and President Akufo-Addo, she was on a mission to equip Baatsonaa with toilet facilities.
“The programme is not just one-fold; in addition to empowering our women with training, we are also embarking on a ‘one area, one toilet’ programme after this training, which will last for the next six days. We are also distributing dual desks and exercise books to schools.
“Also, we are distributing free sewing machines to some of the women,” Ms Serwah Dwumoh Bonsu said.
The aspiring Assembly Member for Baatsonaa said she received all the give-aways from Mr Carlos Ahenkorah to whom she sent a letter of request. The MP donated books, some 200 dual desks, mathematical sets, sewing machines and sanitary facilities.
“And so, what we are doing here for these women today, is by the kindness of President Akufo-Addo and the MP for Tema West,” Ms Dwumoh Bonsu said.
On her part, Ms Akua Okunor, President of staunch Queens Coastal Drive praised President Akufo-Addo and Carlos Ahenkorah for their visionary leadership and asked the blessings of God for them. “Carlos Ahenkorah is a wonderful MP and Deputy Minister of Trade who has helped many people in diverse ways, that is why the women caucus admire him so much and we will continue to retain him so as to enable him promote our interest all the time”. Ms Okunor said.
Mr. Richard Abeiku Mills, the Constituency Organizer said “ Kade Constituency in the Eastern Region wanted Carlos Ahenkorah to be their MP and help them in diverse ways like he is doing for us and we disregarded their idea”.
