Development projects improve livelihood in Bawku West

Zebilla (UE) Nov. 12, GNA - Government policies such as planting for food and jobs, one village one dam, and planting for export and rural development has improved the quality of livelihood in the Bawku West District, Madam Victoria Ayamba, the District Chief Executive (DCE) has said.

Madam Ayamba said this at Zebilla, when she met the media to showcase some development projects the Assembly had undertaken.

 She said nine, out of the 10 dams that were being constructed in 10 communities were almost completed and would provide farmers the opportunity to undertake dry season farming and other community development activities by December 2019.

 About 95 per cent of farmers especially the youth participated in this year’s planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) programme and had a good harvest, she said.

Madam Ayamba said the Assembly was preparing to undertake the rearing for food and jobs programme, which would commence next year and livestock farmers were educated on the importance of livestock and its income generating opportunities.

She encouraged them to register for the programme to enable them expand their animal husbandry.

Speaking on education, she said measures to improve on the educational standards in the district were taken and the District Education Oversight Committee (DEOC) charged the district education directorate to intensify monitoring and supervision in schools.

The Assembly also instituted a best teacher award scheme to motivate teachers and plans to completely absorb the full cost of the basic education certificate examination fees among other things.

Showcasing some of the projects in pictures, the DCE said the Assembly constructed 3-unit classroom blocks with office accommodation for the Teshie, Sapeliga, Kobore, Binaba, Kusanaba Zebilla and Temonde communities among others to improve the dispensation of quality basic education, while students’ dormitories and dining halls were also provided for the two senior high schools at Zebilla and Kusanaba in the district.

She said the Free Senior High School (FSHS) programme increased student enrollment in the senior high schools and given the opportunity for school going age children especially girls to have secondary education.

On the promotion of quality health service delivery, the Assembly constructed and commissioned a 40 bed capacity maternity ward for the Zebilla hospital and the Binaba health centre.

It also built Community Based Health Planning Service (CHPS) compounds in communities to bring health services delivery to doorsteps of the people, she said.
