WVI-Ghana empowers Tempane SHS girls with life skills

Tempane (UE), Nov.11, GNA - Thirty girls from the Tempane Senior High School, Tempane District, Upper East Region, have been trained in Shea butter made products to empower them economically.

The two day training was aimed at equipping the students with skills to produce Shea butter made products such as hand washing soap, Pomade, detergent and cooking oil to generate income and empower them financially.

Mr Justice Atiigah, Bawku West Cluster Project Coordinator, World Vision International-Ghana (WVI-G), an international non organization, explained in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Tempane, that the training would make the girls self-dependent.

Mr Atiigah said it would encourage the girls to use the skills acquired to produce products that would generate income to support them financially and to be taken advantage of by some men.

Mr Rexford Bugri, Bawku West Cluster Manager, WVI-G, stressed the need for girls’ empowerment, saying they were assets and could foster uniform community development for quality livelihood improvement.

Mr Bugri urged stakeholders including the traditional authority, parents and guardians, opinion leaders, religious bodies and other development partners to support the Girl-Child to develop by stopping child marriage, and protecting her through education and other livelihood empowerment opportunities.

“Don’t be quick to make them raw mothers. But wait for them to develop with skills that would benefit them and their dependents,” he said.

Miss Susana Gariba, a third year student, Home Science department, Tempane Senior High School, said she could produce some of the products to sell and buy her personal needs such as footwear, underwear, dresses and materials for her studies.

She commended the WVI-G for the support and assured on behalf of her colleagues, to make judicious use of the skills acquired at the training
