Amedzofe (V/R), Nov. 8, GNA – Nanahemaa Adjoa Awindor, Executive Director, Obaapa Development Foundation has called for the return to the old family system where children were protected and catered for by the community.
She said it was time to “reinvent the wheel” into the new Child and Family Welfare Policy, which tasked communities and their leadership to take care of children’s welfare and growth.
Nanahemaa Awindor was speaking at Obaapa Women and Children’s Day Celebration organised by Obaapa Development Foundation in partnership with Ghanaian Against Child Abuse (GACA), at Amedzofe in the Ho West District of the Volta region as part of the Avatime Amu Festival.
It is on the theme, “Our Children, Our Future, The Role of Community Leaders in Child and Adolescent Protection.”
“We should come together now, more than before as community to take care of our own” she stated.
Nanahemaa Awindor said some parents gave their children silent abuses by giving them extra chore in and out of the house at odd hours without realising that it was harming the children.
She said parents who shouted at their children, reduced their confidence and ability to perform well to their best capacity.
Nanahemaa Awindor called on parents and guardians to love children and groom them to become responsible citizens.
She also charged traditional rulers, opinion leaders, especially unit committee and assembly members to help protect children in communities.
Osie Adzatekpor VII, Paramount Chief of Avatime Traditional Area said the Avatime Tradition Area was doing everything possible to let parents be responsible and nurture their children.
He commended Obaapa Development Foundation for the interest in child welfare and protection, especially in the Avatime Traditional Area over the past three years, saying, “You have shown that the keeper of life is women.”
Cynthia Lamie, Project Coordinator, Obaapa Development Foundation said the Foundation was looking forward to partnerships with other communities to ensure the welfare of children.
