Accra, July 21, GNA - Happy FM, one of the country’s popular sports stations has partnered Donewell Insurance Company Limited to organize a blood donation exercise to help save lives.
The objective of the exercise was to help stock the blood banks of 37 Military Hospital and the National Blood Service.
A statement from Happy Fm to the Ghana News Agency said the exercise was the seventh edition of Corporate Social Responsibilities organised by the two entities in Accra.
Mr Emmanuel Akrumah, the Programmes Manager of Happy FM, said the exercise involved the mobilization of staff of the two institutions and the general public to voluntarily donate blood to replenish Blood Banks.
The statement said last year, more than 200 pints of blood were donated at a similar exercise at the Donewell Insurance head office in Osu, the statement said.
It quoted Mr Akrumah as saying: “This year the turn-out was also very good and we were able to collect 144 pints at the blood donation at AMA centre. All the units of blood collected would be distributed to the National Blood Service and 37 Military Hospital. We also had free eye screening for donors.”
The statement commended Donewell Insurance, who also sponsored last year’s exercise, for the partnership and expressed appreciation to Accra City Hall-Listening Bureau, Dannex Pharmaceutical Company Limited, National Blood Service, 37 Military Hospital and the Advanced Eye Care Ghana for the various forms of support to the exercise.
Madam Jennifer Bebli, the Marketing Manager of Donewell Insurance Company Limited said her organisation was proud to be part of the exercise.
‘’It is a privilege to be part of this exercise because in addition to saving lives, the exercise is a contribution to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals as the blood collected would be beneficial to women in labour and help to reduce child and maternal mortality,” she said.
The statement also said Dr. Mohammed Ameen, the Chief Executive Officer of Advanced Eye Care Ghana, addressing the participants said Advanced Eye Care Ghana was proud to be associated with the initiative of saving lives through blood donation.
“The partnership with Happy Fm formed part of the fulfilment of Advanced Eye Care Ghana’s mission to contribute to the development of Ghana by attending to the health needs of the citizens,” he said.
He, therefore, pledged the clinic’s commitment to continue to support the health sector with free eye care screening and outreaches, the statement said.
Mr Jonas Moli Belko of the National Blood Bank, the statement noted commended all donors for volunteering to save human lives and encouraged the citizenry especially those in good health to donate blood.
Captain Peter Kwarteng of the 37 Military Hospital urged the public to visit hospitals to voluntarily donate blood, saying, it was stressful when emergencies occurred at times that the blood bank was almost empty and thereby resulting in fatalities, the statement said.
