Kenaysi (Ash), June 26, GNA – The World Vision International (WVI) a non-governmental organization, is committing US$ 500,000 to improve on sanitation in the Asutifi North District of the Ahafo Region.
The WVI said the commitment is in response to helping to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal six of ensuring universal access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) services in the District.
Mr Cephas Wedam, the Project Coordinator of the WVI, who announced this on Monday, said the investment is in line with an initiative the World Vision and her partners launched in 2018 to improve on sanitation in the District.
The goal of the four-year project, being implemented by the District Assembly, is aimed at providing access to sustainable safe water to an estimated 32,000 people in the District by 2022.
Mr Wedam was speaking at the inauguration of a District Inter-Agency Coordinating Committee on Sanitation (DICCS) held at Kenyasi, the District capital.
The composition of the 13-member committee consisted of representatives from the Ghana Education Service, Environmental Health Department of the Assembly, the District Assembly and Civil Society Actors.
Mr Wedam said in addition to the funding support, the WVI would provide sanitation and hygiene services in 56 communities, 15 schools and seven healthcare facilities by 2030.
He lauded the implementation of the government’s Rural Sanitation Model and Strategy (RSMS), saying the strategy would create demand and Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) approach in delivering and improving on rural sanitation.
Mr Anthony Mensah, the District Chief Executive, said the Assembly has upped measures, assuring that by 2030, it would be able to ensure 100 per cent access to WASH services.
“Access to sanitation and hygiene is very important to human health and dignity”, he said, and advised the committee to be innovative and work hard to help improve on rural sanitation in the area.
Mr Samuel Boadu Baidan, the Asutifi District Coordinating Director and Chairman of the DICCS, thanked the project implementing partners for the confidence reposed in them saying the committee would intensify campaign on proper sanitation to achieve desirable results.
