Kintampo (B/A), June 26, GNA – The Kintampo North Municipal Assembly on Tuesday presented start-up capital to 54 People with Disabilities (PWDs) in the Municipality to engage in viable economic activities to enhance their socio-economic livelihoods.
The items comprised refrigerators, spraying machines, weedicides, wellington boots, machetes and fufu pounding machines depending on individual’s needs and request made to the Assembly.
Some of the beneficiaries who were already in businesses were also presented with undisclosed sums of monies to expand their economic activities.
Mr Michael Baffoe Sarkodie, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), noted with regret that alms begging among the PWDs on the streets of Kintampo is a worrying trend which must not be encouraged and advised the beneficiaries to ensure judicious use of the items.
He said the Assembly has supported more than 260 PWDs to go into hairdressing, dressmaking, petty trading, farming, leather works and carpentry while several others have been offered scholarships to further their education.
Mr Sarkodie said government has increased beneficiaries under the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme from 866 in 12 communities to 1,732 in 17 communities in the Municipality.
He said all cash grant arrears have been paid to the beneficiaries and advised them and their care-givers to use the monies judiciously.
Mr Sarkodie advised residents in the Municipality to embrace and support government’s “Rearing for Food and Jobs” Programme.
The programme is aimed at developing a competitive and more efficient livestock industry, reduce importation of livestock products, and thus contribute to employment creation.
Mr James Dankwah, one of the beneficiaries, on behalf of his colleagues, expressed gratitude to the Assembly and the government for the support, saying the items would help to improve their standard of living and alleviate their plight.
