Kumasi, June 26, GNA – The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), has called on government and policy makers to improve evaluation mechanisms that would help gauge the impacts of anti-terrorist policies on social cohesion.
A statement copied to the Ghana News Agency and signed by Mr Pius Yeboah Nimako, the General Secretary of NUGS, said a clearer, more harmonized and discerning strategy is needed to fight the concern.
He made the call when he led a NUGS delegation to the residence of Sheikh Dr Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, National Chief Imam, during the launch of a counter terrorism project.
Under the Counter-Terrorism Project, the NUGS is collaborating with the Islamic Research Association of Ghana, Islamic Peace and Security Council of Ghana (IPASEC), chaired by the National Chief Imam and the Anti-Terrorism Unit of the Ghana Police Service (GPS).
The goal is to devise a comprehensive plan to carry out anti- terrorism Project in the Muslim Communities.
It seeks to evaluate and identify factors that have the potential to ignite conflicts and strategic measures to prevent conflicts, extremism and radicalization in order to promote peace and security in the country.
Mr Nimako said involving Islamic communities in the intelligence gathering process will help make it harder for terrorists and their cronies to plan and carry out attacks.
He pledged the readiness of NUGS to cooperate on all fronts to ensure that a comprehensive approach to counter terrorism is reached and called on students across the country to sensitize and educate the citizenry to be more vigilant to help protect the peace.
