Koforidua, June 25, GNA - New Juaben South Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Isaac Apau-Gyasi, has called for monitoring of beneficiaries of the district assembly common fund for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to ensure value for money.
He noted that the fund was set up to empower PWDs to enable them to live decent and independent lives, through economic activities that would keep them from begging on the street.
However, the MCE observed that, despite the support over the years, PWDs were still found on the streets begging and living under indecent conditions and indicated that without monitoring, the situation would not change.
Mr Apau-Gyasi made the call when he presented a total of GH¢53, 600 cedis to 33 PWDs including deaf and dumb and blind school children and an 86 year old man, in the municipality.
Twenty-five of them were given cash amounting to GH¢32,100 to expand their businesses and cater for their educational needs, five were given containers at a cost of GH¢15,500 for petty trading whiles three were given deep freezers costing GH¢6,000 to sell soft drinks and water.
The MCE subsequently charged the Department of Social Services not to end at identifying the beneficiaries but have a system to monitor and track their activities especially their businesses for which the monies were given.
The Municipal Social Services Officer under the Department of Social Welfare, Ms Evelyn Bansah, said the beneficiaries were the second batch receiving support for this year and assured to monitor them to put the monies and other benefits to good use.
