Accra, June 25, GNA — Mrs Alice Alima Kala, the Ag. Director of the Centre for National Culture has urged the Ghanaian youth to value the Ghanaian culture and traditional norms.
She said that the emergence of new trends of fashion, foods, other forms of social activities and life styles across the globe had influenced most youth to lose touch with very important practices of the tradition, value and norms of the culture.
Mrs Kala was speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) after an inter school competition held at the Centre to bring back the fading art of folksong and storytelling dubbed “Adesa Village.”
“In the past domestic services such as serving of water to our parents or visitors, speaking with each other and the elderly, getting up for the elderly to sit amongst other courteous practices were carefully adhered to by the youth but we see these cherished practices fading out of our society gradually,” she said.
Mrs Kala said that there was the need for awareness creation to educate the youth on the importance and beauty of the Ghanaian culture.
She added that in view of this, the Centre organized the Wear Ghana programme in March to promote the use of Ghanaian fabrics such as Kente, smocks and other wears made in Ghana.
“You do not have to expose sensitive parts of your body in the quest to attract men, you must know that decent dressing leads to decent marriage”, she said.
She said the Centre had put together some activities to educate and instill Ghanaian cultural norms and values into the citizenry for the next quarter of the year.
She said the Centre would host a cooking competition for market women, tertiary students and vocational students within the municipality on July 4thd dubbed “Kpataashie”.
In September the Centre would host a “Handicraft Exhibition” followed by “Chief’s Festival” which would be a durbar to bring together Chiefs and family heads within the municipality to promote royalty, the role of traditional rulers and leaders within the communities.
“To climax the year’s activities the Centre will hold a Coral Festival with a Ghanaian, African touch to promote the Ghanaian Arts and Culture, “she said.
