Sunyani, June 24, GNA – MTN Ghana has offered employable skill training to create jobs for 40 young people in the Sunyani Municipality.
As part of the training package, the mobile telecommunication company presented tablets and start-up kits to the participants to showcase their products on the internet and to expand their market base.
Selection of the participants, who went through two weeks intensive training in bead making, hairdressing, body make-ups and website design, was facilitated by the National Youth Authority and the Sunyani Youth Development Association (SYDA).
Speaking at the closing session held in Sunyani, Madam Justina Owusu-Banahene, Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive expressed worry about streetism and hawking among young people in the Municipality and thanked MTN for the training support.
She appealed to other telecommunication companies to emulate MTN’s gesture and help provide jobs for the teeming unemployed youth and school dropouts in the Municipality.
Mad. Owusu-Banahene expressed regret over alcoholism and drug abuse, which were contributing to high cases of mental disorders among the youth and were gradually taking over the streets of Sunyani.
Mr. Akwasi Kwarteng, MTN team head for Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regions, said the Company was determined to help reduce unemployment among the youth by extending the skill training to benefit more people.
He said the possibility of extending the training depended on the impact it would have on the beneficiaries and advised them to use the skills acquired to improve on their socio-economic livelihoods.
Mr. Kwarteng reminded MTN subscribers and mobile money users to be wary of fraudsters and advised them to keep their PIN secret and be vigilant when doing mobile transactions.
Mrs. Fati Bamba, the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regional Director of the NYA, expressed the hope that the trainees would utilise the knowledge acquired to transform their lives.
Describing the training as “life changing and impactful”, the Regional NYA Director commended MTN Ghana and called for deepened partnership between the Company and the Authority to help many of the unemployed Ghanaian youth.
