Juaben (Ash), June 19, GNA - Ms Ama Pomaa Boateng, Member of Parliament (MP) for Juaben, has rolled out a ‘Total Sanitation Campaign’ initiative in her constituency to help create awareness on sanitation and related issues amongst the people.
The initiative, she said, was to promote a healthy living by keeping the environs as clean as possible for sustainable development.
In line with this, the MP was working hand-in-hand with local government authorities and stakeholders to provide household and institutional toilet facilities for the constituents
Ms Pomaa Boateng, who was addressing a meeting of the people at Juaben in the Juaben Municipality of the Ashanti Region, said the lack of clean drinking water and sanitation systems had been a severe public health concern in Ghana over the years.
According to the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, poor sanitation cost the country 290 million US Dollars annually.
Ms Pomaa Boateng, expressed worry of the fact that majority of Ghanaians lacked access to toilet facilities and that, it was responsible for the incidence of open defecation amongst the people.
She enjoined the decentralised assemblies to work assiduously to improve sanitation services delivery for effective management of the country’s waste generated.
Ms Pomaa Boateng, who was accompanied by Mr. Kodjo Ansah-Sem, the Juaben Municipal Chief Executive, as part of her working visit to the Constituency, also supervised a ground-breaking ceremony for work to commence on two 16-seater place of convenience for the Abesim and Achiase communities.
The projects, being funded by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), are to be completed within six months to improve sanitation in those areas.
Mr Ansah-Sem said there was the need for strict adherence to the various national and local environmental sanitation laws and regulations advocated.
He called on the people to be supportive of the government’s “Toilet for All” agenda to help end open defecation in the country.
