Saltpond (C/R), June 19, GNA - The Mfantseman Municipal Assembly on Tuesday distributed 13 motorbikes to the Department of Agriculture to effectively enhance extension services.
The distributing of motorbikes funded by the Canadian Government under the Modernizing Agriculture in Ghana (MAG) Project is in line with Government’s pledge to revamp the agricultural sector to aid the transformation of the country’s economy.
The move would significantly give strong backing to improving extension and monitoring services under the government's flagship programme of ‘Planting for Food and Jobs‘(PFJ).
Mr. Kenneth Kelly Assuman, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) who handed over the motorbikes to the Municipal Directorate of Agriculture for onward distribution to extension agents in the Municipality, said they were part of 3,000 earmarked for distribution nationwide.
He pledged government’s continuous support for farmers and staff of the Department to achieve the objective of transforming the economy through agriculture.
The MCE said that the motorbikes would ease the challenge of reaching out to farmers in villages and hamlets where the roads were largely unmotorable to enable farmers in these communities access modern farming methods, cultural practices and the best agronomic practices to increase their yield.
He noted that the Assembly would be responsible for the fuelling and maintenance of the motorbikes and cautioned the beneficiaries against using them for their personal activities as it was purely meant for field work.
He also advised them against careless riding and flaunting of motor traffic laws.
He reminded them on the need to always have their crush helmets on.
Mr Ebenezer Azasu, the Municipal Director of Agriculture, expressed gratitude to the government of Ghana and the Canadian Government for supporting the Agricultural revolution in Ghana.
He said the role of the agricultural extension agents was critical to the successful implementation of the PFJ programme and they must be well resourced to enhance efficiency.
Beneficiaries were urged to take proper care of the motorbikes and ensure regular maintenance to prolong their lifespan.
