Kumasi, June 13, GNA – Eighteen convicted inmates serving various jail terms at the Kumasi Central Prison are taking part in the on-going Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
The candidates aged between 19 and 31 years are final year students of the junior high section of the Reformation School within the prison yard seeking to advance to senior high school.
Just as other candidates from various public and private schools across the country are participating in the exams, they are taught by qualified teachers with the same syllabus prescribed by the Ghana Education Service (GES).
They were escorted to the examination center at the Armed Forces Senior High School each morning by Prison Wardens to write the papers.
Deputy Director of Prisons (DDP) Samuel Owusu Amponsah, the Ashanti Regional Commander of Ghana Prison Service, who briefed the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said the candidates were adequately prepared for the examination.
He said the reformation school was set up to cater for inmates brought to the facility while in school in order not to curtail their education just because they had been imprisoned.
He said though it was not compulsory for such inmates to enroll in the school, it provided opportunity for those willing to continue their education despite their incarceration.
The Prison, he noted, was meant to reform inmates and that the Service would continue to pursue initiatives that would add value to the lives of prisoners to make their integration into society easier after serving their sentences.
He appealed to corporate bodies, philanthropists and well-meaning Ghanaians to support the reformation school with logistics especially, teaching and learning materials to provide the best of tuition to the students.
