Tema, June 12, GNA - The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), Ghana Water Company and the City of Aarhus of Denmark will soon sign a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) on urban water management.
Mr Felix Mensah Nii Anang-La, Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, will lead a team of technical officials to sign the MOU in Denmark where Mr Jacob Bundsgaard, Mayor of Aarhus, would sign for his outfit.
The agreement was borne out of a sister-city relationship between the two port and industrial cities which had similar challenges of wastewater management from both households and industries.
The cooperation between Tema and Aarhus which would run from 2019 to 2022, was expected to be extended.
Mr Frank Asante, TMA’s Public Relations Officer, revealing this to the Ghana News Agency, said the cooperation under the MOU involved the management of the urban water in areas including safe and sustainable water supply.
Mr Asante added that other areas were safe and sustainable wastewater treatment, integration with city planning including improvement of recreating change adaptation and contingency plans for storm drains.
He indicated that in February, this year, officials of the Aarhus Municipality and Aarhus Water (the water utility of Aarhus) paid a visit to Tema and carried out a feasibility study on the wastewater and general water challenges facing the Metropolis.
He said the project would help in reducing to the barest minimum the volume of untreated wastewater from households and industries discharged into water bodies and the sea.
According to him, the wastewater treatment would be the first phase of measures to address the liquid waste management challenges facing Tema and serve as a pivot for the total rehabilitation of its central sewer systems.
Mr Anang-La, on his part, expressed joy at the cooperation, stating that it would afford them the platform to share good practices and build the capacity of the technical officials.
He was optimistic that the project would yield good and expected result for it to be extended to other areas to help curb the contamination of water bodies with untreated effluents.
