Wa, June 12, GNA – The Upper West Regional Minister, Dr Hafiz Bin-Salih, has applauded management of Ghana News Agency for upholding the values of truth and impartiality, which are the foundation for ethical journalism and pivot for national unity.
He said the Agency has gained huge respect for its professionalism in news gathering and reporting on national issues and events and was revered for its credibility over the years.
The Minister said he believed the media was a critical partner in national development, which could propagate effectively what government was doing and the GNA is position for that task.
Dr Bin-Salih said this when the Agency’s General Manager, Mr Albert Kofi Owusu, paid a courtesy call on him at his office.
It was to deepen relations between the Upper West Regional Coordinating Council for wider coverage of events towards national growth, development and unity.
Mr Owusu was in the region with GNA Chief Accountant Mr Kweku Adjei Larbi to acquaint himself with conditions under which the staff worked and also explore strategic areas and innovations for improved operations.
Dr Bin-Salih said: “The GNA over the years has shown it is a credible media, I respect the GNA for its credibility, anytime I read stories of GNA I see credibility,” he added.
Despite the Agency’s critical role in reporting development issues, Dr Bin-Salih noted that, there were many national development issues and happenings championed by state actors, which have not been adequately captured by the media.
He was not too happy about the seemingly over-concentration of the media on political figures and issues at the expense of equally very important social and economic matters critical for development.
Dr Bin-Salih said government had implemented many pro-poor policies like the free Senior High School, Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) and encouraged journalists to propagate those development issues in the Region.
He said the GNA had demonstrated authenticity and professionalism in news reportage over the years and urged the Agency to unearth new happenings and propagate activities of non-political actors, which contribute to national development in diverse ways.
Mr Owusu on his part highlighted the mandate of GNA as a state news wire service and the purpose of his visit to deepen working relations with the RCC.
It was to discover how best to promote government activities and development of Upper West.
He urged the Minister to always involve the GNA in the RCC activities for projection of government policies and programmes for national development.
Mr Owusu indicated that the Agency was about introducing various social media platforms including YouTube pages to showcase government projects, programmes and activities happening in across the nation.
Another feature to be unveiled by management of GNA is the inclusion of videos and audio in its news items.
