Accra, June 11, GNA – Mr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has reported himself to the police ending weeks of stand-off with the law enforcement agency.
He had until Tuesday afternoon refused an invitation by the police to assist their investigation and had been publicly backed by the Council of Elders of the party he is leading.
His change of heart followed an arrest warrant obtained by the police and this was confirmed by a press statement issued and signed by the General Secretary of the NDC, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah.
It said the “full complement of the party’s legal team is in touch with the police and closely monitoring the situation.”
The statement added that some senior party officials were also on standby at the Police Headquarters, where Mr. Ampofo was being interrogated.
It called on party members and supporters to remain calm.
When the Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited the Police Headquarters, there was tight security at the main entrance and all exit points.
The officers would not allow any journalist in and would not speak to anybody.
Mr. Sylvester Mensah and Mr. Joshua Akamba, both leading members of the NDC were spotted at the place. They were there to show solidarity with their Chairman.
