About 23, 390 candidates write 2019 BECE in Kumasi

Kumasi, June 11, GNA - The 23, 390 candidates comprising 11, 106 boys and 12, 284 girls, who registered to write the 2019 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the Kumasi Metropolis, defied the early morning showers to write the examination.

Ms. Martha Owusu-Agyemang, the Metropolitan Director of Education, who disclosed this said the figure fell short of last year’s, which was 24, 513, made up of 11, 690 boy and 12, 823 girls.

She was touring some of the examination centres on Monday with Mr. Osei Assibey-Antwi, the Metropolitan Chief Executive of Kumasi.

This year’s exams saw 189 public and 347 private schools participating at the 88 centres.

State Experimental Basic School, Saint Hubert Seminary, Kumasi Secondary Technical Institute (KSTI) and Opoku Ware School, were some of the centres visited by the MCE.

“You should do independent work devoid of any cheating for the success of the exams,” she remarked.   

Ms. Owusu-Agyemang wished the candidates well and advised the candidates to avoid examination malpractices.

Mr Assibey-Antwi, said this year’s attendance was encouraging, saying the candidates should not entertain any fears as they wrote the exams.

“The society expects so much from you, therefore, it is your duty to justify the huge investment made in you by working harder to pass the exams,” he noted.

The MCE gave the assurance that the government would continue to expand the base of education to help assist the majority of the youth to acquire knowledgeable skills, citing implementation of the ‘Free Senior High School’ initiative.
