Tema, June 10, GNA - A Total of 7,377 final year students of Junior High Schools in the Tema Metropolis and the Tema West Municipality on Monday commenced the writing of this year's Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
The number comprised of 2,353 boys and 2,049 girls from Tema Metropolis and 3,498 made up of 1,595 boys and 1,903 girls from Tema West Municipality.
The examination took off smoothly with few incidents of late arrival of exam papers from the West Africa Examination Council to the various centres leading to between 10 to 30 minutes delay in the start of the English paper.
Mrs Margaret Nsiah-Asamoah, Tema Metropolitan Education Director, accompanied by officials from the directorate and Mr Felix Mensah Nii Anang-La, Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive and Mrs Adwoa Amoako, Tema West Municipal Chief Executive, made separate visits to some of the centres in the two areas.
They visited the Chemu SHS, Tema Methodist Day SHS, Our Lady of Mercy (OLAMS) and other centres in Tema Metropolis as well as Sakumono School Complex, Holy Child School and Fountain Head Christian School centres in Tema West Municipality.
Mrs Nsiah-Asamoah, after the visits, described the examinations as well conducted and impressive saying the few delays recorded were due to late release of the papers to prevent leakage.
She encouraged the candidates to study hard and eschew examination malpractice as that could lead to the cancellation of their papers and that of innocent students.
"There is no apor anywhere, just learn hard and write", she added.
Mrs Adwoa Amoako, Tema West Municipal Chief Executive, who distributed food to all candidates said the gesture was to remind the children that the Assembly had them in mind.
Mrs Amoako also reiterated the need for candidates to study hard and concentrate on their studies to enable them pass with distinction and enjoy government's free Senior High School policy.
Mr Felix Mensah Nii Anang-La, Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, addressing the candidates, also urged them to put in their best, relax, read and answers the questions as required of them.
